Solid lens but blurry focus

PROS

  • Easily Interchangeable
  • Durable
  • Strong Construction

CONS

  • Blurry Focus

BEST USES

  • Video
  • Landscape/Scenery
  • Indoors/Low Light

Comments:

This is a nice solid and sturdy lens. It can very neatly packed and it comes with it's own case. It also comes with a lens hood which is awesome!!! It's a fast lens with nice blurry background. I use it with my Canon 60D. Takes great pictures. HOWEVER... when you look through the view finder and the camera is locked on a subject, it still looks blurry. But when the picture is taken it looks clear through the LCD screen. I'm not sure if mine is the only that does that or maybe calibration is needed (not even sure if that's possible). But Overall its a good lens. I gave it 4 stars because of that one fault.

A Great Replacement to the Kit Lens

5.0

PROS

  • Nice Bokeh
  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Rugged

CONS

  • Heavy

BEST USES

  • Night Photography
  • Weddings/Events
  • Indoors/Low Light

Comments:

I use the lens for family gatherings, pictures of my child, and general photography. It is a welcome replacement to my canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range is great for low light use. Photos are sharp, and the autofocus is smooth, quiet, and quick. I would recommend this lens for anyone considering an f/2.8 standard zoom lens. It is a great value at a reasonable price with excellent performance.

Great Lens for the Price

4.0

PROS

  • Consistent Output
  • Sharp
  • Constant aperture

CONS

  • Plastic construction
  • Short focus ring range
  • Stiff zoom ring

BEST USES

  • Landscape/Scenery
  • Video
  • Indoors/Low Light

Comments:

I bought this rather than getting the kit lens for my Canon 60D and I have been really impressed with it. It covers a decent focal range, the stabilization is really good, and constant f/2.8 is awesome. The lens is sharp wide open and is very good for low light video. It feels a bit plasticy, but is still cheaper than the Canon EF-S f/2.8 17-55mm, which costs more than some L lenses. The zoom is a bit stiff and the focus ring is delicate in the sense that there is about 30 degrees of rotation. The lens is AF or MF, and must be manually switched on the side; setting it to AF locks the motor in place. The bottom line is that I'm very happy with this lens. It has its faults, but the visual quality is far better than the Canon 18-55 kit lens, and is sharper than the comparable stabilized Tamron 18-50mm f/2.8. At time of purchase it was almost 40% cheaper than the Canon offering. All and all it is a great first lens for those who want to skip the kit lens on crop sensor bodies and a good stepping stone until you can invest in L series lenses down the road. At least that's my plan.

A great replacement of the kit lens. My 50mm 1.8 is also back in the box given when/where I take most of my photos. So far no complains.

Comments:

For me this lens replaces the Normal Zoom "Kit" lens from Canon. I felt that I was missing out on quality and sharpness with the low cost, plastic mount Canon lens. This Sigma is a big step up in speed and quality. The images are sharp and well saturated with consistent edge to edge tonality. This is the lens that will live on my Canon 7D. My lens stable is now populated primarily with Sigma glass and I am a happy camper. This lens is heavy in comparison but I will pay that price for the speed, durability and build quality of this Sigma.

A nice surprise (though I should have thought of it first) is that the 2.8 maximum aperture makes manual focusing easier than with the kit lens. Once you get to f4 the lens is very sharp, good contrast. I'm very pleased.

Comments:

i got this lens for my friend's wedding day. the lens has a wide aperture value f/2.8 which can give you much easier control in low light condition inside the church where flash is not allowed during the ceremony. The HSM function provide quick auto-focus and nearly quiet sound. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function give you up to 2 more stops (not as mentioned by manufacture that it can provide up to 4 more stops but i think it does not matter) slower shutter speed capabilities. The image quality is awesome on the crop sensor body (i am using t2i) and it is very sharp at f/2.8. Also i have taken this lens out for street photography and this lens is fast enough to capture the moments on the street which you cannot do a retake. I am very happy with the result of this lens!

Comments:

This lens in HALF the price of the canon 17 to 55 that I assume it was modeled of in a way. It is really hard to see any difference between the 2 in terms of image quality, I think the canon has faster auto focus but that doesn't bother me. Save $600, go with the Sigma!

Comments:

Very well made lens at half the price of the Canon equivalent (17-55mm f2.8)Very sharp focus wide open at 2.8, but razor sharp from 3.5 to 8! I am stunned every time I shoot with this lens! The images turn out so sharp, and the OS (image stabilization) works fantastic (gives me a few more stops using handheld). Buy this lens and you will not regret it at all!
