Amazing little lens!

5.0

PROS

  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • Beautiful accurate colors
  • Consistent Output
  • Nice Bokeh

CONS

  • Difficult to Clean
  • Focus hunts in low light
  • Heavy

BEST USES

  • Indoors/Low Light
  • Landscape/Scenery
  • Weddings/Events
  • Wildlife Photos

Comments:

This is a great all purpose lens, I use it for landscapes, city scapes, portraits, and as a walk around lens. The colors are rich, accurate, and brilliant, the focus is very fast though it does hunt a bit at 20mm in low light. The output rivals my canon 24-70L. The housing is tough and durable. Weather sealing would be a plus but a great value for the money.

Why didn't I give this 5 stars? Because there is no "Perfect" lens. Hence, I'd never give anything 5. So, don't let the 4-star rating throw you. I love this lens. I got this when I decided to expand my photography business to also include landscape photography (my first love) to go with my weddings, events and portraits. Until then I used a Sigma 20mm f1.8, which was primarily for natural light shooting the insides of large churches and the occasional wedding group shot. This lens is SO much more versatile than a fixed focus 20mm! The distortion is much lighter than a full fisheye but still obvious and very pleasant. Focus is fast outdoors, less so inside, but not by much. Very acceptable. As with all Sigmas, leave the lens hood on outside as they are prone to light flare issues. The other two drawbacks are in the "duh" category. 1. It's not as fast as the 20mm f1.8. Meaning, I have to use a tripod to capture those inside-the-church shots. Not a biggie - especially since I can now capture so much more of the church. Also, at 1.8, the 20mm was not especially sharp anyway. I mean, you're not going to get serious sharpness out of a wide angle until you stop down to about 5.6 or 8 anyway. So, in fact, this now makes me do what I should have been doing all along, indoors: put it on a tripod, stop it down and get wonderful results. 2. Because it's so wide, you cannot stack filters without creating serious vignetting problems. Just make sure you have a very thin polarizer and UV filter (for standard protection). Like I said: Duh. Bottom line: This is one great lens. I'm thrilled with the purchase. So much so that the old 20mm has been sold. Get one and try to figure out how you ever got along without it.

I went back and forth between this one and the other version with the 4-5.6f variable aperture, but I am glad i decided to spend a little extra for this lens. It produces consistently clear images with quick and accurate auto focus. It is a great addition to my camera bag
