The camera is exactly as I expected. It is light years ahead of my iST in low light performance. It has a wide range of features for novice to pro. Really like that is supports legacy pentax lenses. And for 1/2 price (from the original list) it is a great deal.

This camera has it all. Compact, lightweight, well built, water/dust resistant, great LCD display, and great features. But what really sets it apart is its image quality and performance. Its image quality at high ISO settings is fantastic, and its dynamic range is incredible. DSLRs have always had poor dynamic range in high contrast situations. I took a number of pictures with both my K20 and the K5 where there was a lot of contrast (very bright and also dark shadowed areas. With the K5 you can pick up much more detail in the shadows and the brights are not burned out. This is straight from the camera as a jpeg without any editing. I can't wait to try it out on some sunsets.

I give the K-5 5 stars. I've used the K10D for nearly 5 years and have found the K-5 to be a superb upgrade (not that I've retired the K10). It get excellent marks for great color and overall image quality. The high ISO and advanced noise reduction take digital photography to another level. It's easy to navigate the info screens to rapidly change settings. The in-camera level is a great addition. I shoot a lot of fine art for clients. Leveling the camera to eliminate parallax distortion has always been a big headache until now. In-camera HDR is another big plus. The many digital filters make this a fun camera as well as a fine photographic instrument. I've only made a brief stab at trying to use live view, a tripod is absolutely necessary. My experience with both the K-5 and the K10 is that they are tightly sealed. A few of my friends with more popular brands complain about dust getting into their cameras even when they are stored in cases. I shoot in all kinds of conditions, including in downpours and snowstorms without a problem, so much so that I was initially perplexed when the issue was first raised with me by another photographer. My only complaint about the K-5 is the cheap strap, which is too short and too narrow. For my money including a good, sexy strap would be smart marketing by Pentax. Including a strap that you want to throw in the garbage isn't a good way to brand a camera.

I love this camera, its a huge advance. I've used a Pentax K10D for around five years (and after spending $400 to repair it after a serious fall I plan to keep using it for a long time to come.) That said the high ISO of the K5 and superior color make the K5 my main camera. For action shots the rapid fire burst mode is outstanding (warning in high speed burst you have to let go of the shutter or you'll take a whole lot more shots than you think.) The in-camera HDR is a big bonus. The K-5 includes a number of in camera filters which make it a fun camera as well as a high quality photographic instrument. (Generally the way I use these filters is to shoot in RAW or RAW+, convert to jpeg in-camera, then apply filters and save as new file.) Live view is a new feature and I'm still trying to master it. Seems a little hard to get good focus, but then again my preference is for using the viewfinder. Another huge advantage is the superior sealing of the Pentax K-5 (and K10). Some of my friends who use Nikons complain bitterly about dust invading their cameras even sitting in the case. I go tromping around is all kinds of weather and conditions with no problems. Because of the improvements in color and overall picture quality I'd advise anyone interested in photography outside a sealed bubble, dump your Canon or Nikon and get a Pentax K5. Easy to use controls. Info screens make changing setting easy and fast. My only complaint is that Pentax should provide a better strap. The cheap strap is too short and too narrow. Best to have a quick release too. From a marketing point of view, improving that one thing could help sell the brand. A sexy "K5" strap could help sell the camera.

My Last DSLR was the K-7 a slight step up from my K-10. After a lot of thought I decided to purchase the K-5. The improvements made a good camera much better. Since it is the same body as the K-7 there was no learning curve. The new sensor has outstanding resolution (Highest in class DXO). The low light performance is virtually noise free up to 3200 and really good at 6400. There are a lot of other improvements under the skin including a bigger burst rate and expanded user modes. The changes in focus modes in live view initially made me think there was a problem with writing to the card but I soon figured out that to focus with phase detection it lifts the mirror, focuses, then drops it when pressing the shutter halfway, so I hadn't actually made an exposure. The other modes were not confusing. Lots of plesant supprises. I am a semi-retired pro that has reclaimed my amateur status. I shoot events, travel and a few weddings to support my photography.

This K-5D is an upgrade from my K-10D. Primarily I wanted a faster autofocus, better low-light performance and overall more capability. The high-ISO performance is notable, and the camera is lighter. I'm getting used to a slightly different control layout though the menu is easier to use than the K-10. There is a bit of a learning curve compared with the older model, but it's still a Pentax and works that way. Now we'll see if the camera out-performs my lens selection....

I researched this purchase for 4 months before buying a DSLR that I wouldn't have to upgrade any time soon. I looked at the comparible canons and nikons and the weather resistant housing sold me. The image quality is outstanding, even with the 18-55mm kit lens and it makes it easier to take great photographs. I plan to invest in other Pentax lenses to start a system and so far I am very pleased. Trust me, I looked long and hard before buying this camera and Abe's had the best price[...]

Comments:

I enjoy photographing wildlife, mostly birds. With the excellant high ISO performance of this camera, it will allow me to shoot pictures at two to four times the shutter speed I could with my K-7, thereby increasing sharpness when shooting with my 500mm lens. I loved my K-7, but the K-5 adds the icing to the cake regarding image quality at higher ISO speeds, plus quicker focus, and a number of new or improved features. One particularly nice enhancement is the ability to shoot HDR pictures handheld now.
