Amazing lens. The colors are excellent. The clarity is outstanding. The SDM is very quiet, though a bit slow. Since we dont need any kind of IS or VR or other fancy mechanism with Pentax SR, this lens is comparatively cheaper than similar Canon, Nikon, Sony or others.

Tried using it to take a picture of a snake in my back yard. It was hard to focus when I was up to it. You really have to be back in order to use this lense.

Comments:

Despite this is a telephoto zoom lens, this DA* by Pentax lives up to its reputation when comparing to many prime lens.I pair this lens with a Pentax K20D, this lens takes 67mm filters, the filter I cap on this lens is a Skyline 1A MC -- perhaps this is the cheapest investment to protect a near-thousand-dollars piece of heavy optics. This lens is very well built, on the bulky side, heavy but very impressive looking especially when the included lens hood in on. Since my K20D was coupled with a BG2 vertical grip, this lens balance very well in both landscape and portrait orientations. The focal length of this lens on a DSLR is about 70–200mm in equivalence. I praise the aperture of this lens from 2.8 to 22 which makes indoor photography possible and fun without the use of flash. On the other hand, I wish the minimum focus distance of this lens would be shorter than 100cm, this makes macro close up impossible, to compensate that I utilize the high power zoom to capture macro image, and the results were stunning: the colors were very real, depth of field was excellent, and the CAs and flare were better than my expectation. Due to lack of Macro capability, this lens will not let you take close up of pollen of flowers or reflections in a morning dew, but this is just my personal preference and it should not effect the overall score of this lens. The focus ring occupied the majority length of the lens while the zoom ring sits near the camera body, since this is a DA lens it doesn't have an aperture ring. Aperture setting can be controlled on the camera.Since this lens rated as a professional graded lens, and its filter size is 67mm, so when you have to buy a filter for it (especially a circular polarizer), expect to pay more than you expected. I own this lens for more than a month as I am typing this review, and I have taken more than 100 shots using this lens at outdoor, indoor, and auditorium. I am very happy with the built and image quality of this lens, I shop this lens online at a bargain price of [$] while other local stores sell for more than $1000.If you can only afford to buy one lens for you camera, this is the one you will want to buy and this is the only lens you will need for all of your occasions!

Easistly one of the best zoom lenses Pentax has made. With this lens as your midrange lens and a close zoom (DA*16-50 f2.8) and a long prime like a (DA 300 F4) you have a awesome kit.
