Comments:

Had broken a similar lens in a fall...zoom lenses that are larger do not work well indoors. Works about as good as the original lens I had.

Comments:

This lens has very good construction, decent image quality and weather resistant (WR) sealing all of which make it a good choice as a general walk around lens. The weak points are at 18 and 55mm when used wide open and exhibits some vignetting and barrel distortion at 18mm and softness at 55mm. When used at these focal lenghts at f8, the performance improves. Its best performance is around 35mm. Considering the price point of this lens it is a real bargain that can hold its own against mid-grade consumer zooms. With its weather sealing and used with a WR sealed body, I no longer worry about shooting in adverse conditions.

Comments:

Kit lenses are generally regarded as just something to "tide you over" 'til you can afford a "real" lens. Not the Pentax smc DA 18-55m F3.5-5.6 AL WR! This lens is very versatile and the pictures it renders are consistently sharp, with great contrast, color and clarity. The workmanship and the materials are above average for a lens of this type, and it has the added benefit of being weather sealed! It's hard to believe a kit lens would have this much to offer. I would highly recommend it as a general walk around lens (even in the rain or snow!). The only drawback I can see is that with it's F3.5-5.6 maximum aperture, it isn't the fastest lens in the world- but with today's cameras' superior high ISO preformance and built in flash, that's almost a non-issue! Definitely worth a look!
