I wish the flash would use this without internal batteries, because this might let the flash stay cooler. I use Lithium batteries, which I need to rethink, because of heat issues. It is not uncommon for me to take 600 pictures in a 45 minute stretch, and the flash will overheat with that many flashes.

Comments:
I used the SB-9 twice so far; once at a party and once at a kids indoor basketball game. I purchased the SD-9 for my SB-900 because I usually get one photo where the flash just doesn't have enough power or recycle time between photos and would have been "the" shot only if I had more power. Well, with the SD-9 I didn't miss a shot and that was with even using alkaline batteries, which has the slowest recycle time. I attached the power pack to the bottom of the camera at the tripod mount hole and with it pushed forward a bit on the right side made it comfortable to hold the camera and see through the view finder without it hitting my chin. You can always attach it to your belt choose to. No regrets on the purchase, I'm glad I now have it!

Comments:
I have read mixed reviews of the Chinese copies. Their price is attractive but there is some question whether they improve recycle times, function only every other shot, etc. The genuine Nikon product actually works, no question. The price is a little tough to swallow.

used the sd-9 out of the box for a wedding. in combination with 2700mah nimh batteries, the sd-9 delivered full power on over 1000 shots. not sure what i would have done without it. a definite in your camera bag if you shoot heavy on flash.

This is a must have product for wedding photography. Not having to worry about changing batteries is important. I actually attached this to my flash bracket as it is light enough, and did not have to worry about hanging it off my belt and many cords all over. My only concern is the power cable from the power pack to the flash is hard wired into the unit, and should this fail or get damaged, repair/replacement is an issue. I would like to see a modular configuration where I could have additional spare power cords.

Get 2x to 3x the number of flash fires with less than half the recycle time. Works best with Sanyo Eneloop AA rechargeable batteries. (Slightly slower recycle and fewer shots from Alkaline cells.) Please note, you can use either 4 AA OR 8 AA in the SD-9 but you MUST have 4 AA in the SB-900 still. Either way you still get ~1 second recycle times. Only the number of fires differs depending on the number of AA installed. The pouch allows for a belt to be looped through it or it can also be attached around the leg of a light stand.
