this is an amazing camera - the resolution is great (just large enough to crop images and use the cropped image at full size), the build quality is impressive (it's nice and solid, without being too heavy), and the sensor quality/image quality are amazing - i can't wait to print some images at large sizes (>16x20). i've used the camera at family events in low-light situations, outdoors for some landscape/architecture photography, and for some logn exposures at night (fireworks). in every situation, the camera has performed beautifully.

This camera works well in a variety of different settings from extremely low light event settings to well lit outdoor scenes and in the studio with little to no transitional difficulty, something my other cameras were virtually incapable of doing.

This camera is great in low light. I would say high ISO performance and the FX sensor are the primary reasons to buy the D700. The D700 is a solid pro FX sensor camera. The body is small for an FX camera, much smaller than the D3/D3S, but it's still solid and has a good weight. It is closer in size to the d300s and a little larger than the d90. It will be easy for any DSLR Nikon user to pick up this camera and start shooting. Being able to remap many of the function buttons is a great feature. The camera controls are easy to find and use, even for my smaller female hands. A built-in digital level, depth of field preview, 51 point/3d focusing, and several bracketing modes help with creative endeavors. For flash, I would recommend an SB-700 or SB-900. I have used the D700 successfully in commander mode controlling Nikon CLS speedlights, and with a PocketWizard setup, which is the best thing in the world (just works - great). With price being considered, it is a strong contender against the D3's low light ability, although it's not *quite* as good as the D3S in terms of low noise at high ISO (the D3s can probably take reasonable photos in a dark closet). The D700 is FANTASTIC compared to the "pro-sumer" bodies when looking at speed, performance, and capability. Above ISO 6400 where noise starts to ramp up, but ISO performance was the most heavy influence on my decision to buy this camera and I have not been disappointed. If you are stepping up from a DX body, be aware that the length of all of your lenses will get shorter. Read about this if you do not understand how a larger sensor will affect lenses and pixels. Also, any DX lenses you have will become effectively lame and unusable because the image will be cropped, so you will want to consider whether your lenses are up to par with an FX camera and readjust your collection to be FX compatible. This body is also weather sealed, so you don't have to worry about being caught in foul weather like you do with other bodies. I have lots of lenses, including several f/1.4's (85mm, 24mm, 50mm) that make the D700 a great low-light option, but I love my Nikon 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6 AF-S Nikkor ED VR Lens on this body. Using it with the D700, I was doing f/32 long exposure day shots of water. I highly recommend the lens; It's a great travel/everyday zoom, although f/3.5 is not really that good for low light situations, I tend to keep it on my camera as my "go-to" lens (it's way smaller and has a longer focal length than the 70-200, which is shortened by the larger FX sensor. I have not noticed any problems with zoom "breathing"/dust input from this lens after using it for several weeks. I highly recommend it as a companion purchase. Another thing you should look into for this kind of investment is an Arctic Butterfly sensor cleaner tool and Lighted Loupe. If you are not terrified of cleaning your sensor, you probably should be, but this definitely makes it do-able at home. In some small way I wish that it could…

A typical Nikon. Great. I have lots of old full frame lenses and this camera works perfect with ALL of them...even manual focus non-cpu lenses.

Seeing the difference between the D90 which is touted to have hign iso noise reduction and the D700 is amazing. It will move the quality of your low light photography into another dimension. I could not imagine shooting anything above 1000 iso on the D90 but I am very comfortable when I need that extra light shooting at 4000 on the D700. The better build quality and design is also very noticable in this body, good ergonomics, and nice additional features. Whats not to like, the price hurts a bit, but its worth every penny and would buy it even if it cost more.

The D700 is the most advanced camera I have used. Tests that I did in available light show that ISO's of up to 3200 are nearly noise free with 6400 and even 12,800 usable. The pop-up flash makes a great commander for the Nikon CLS lighting system. Images from this camera are sharp and the color is great. 14 bit RAW captures are a plus. This is a great portrait and event camera but it has the capability of handling action. The highlight clipping warning seems a bit inaccurate, however, as it will flash even with a perfect exposure.

The full frame sensor with large pixel pitch provides for superb resolution, and allows for moderately high ISO (800) that is very good quality. I shoot from a kayak a lot, and this is the combination I have needed. Prints of 10" x 15" are coming out with fine detail rendered clearly.

This camera is great for low light shooting. Shoot with confidence in low light knowing you can crank up the ISO and still get low noise on your photos. I bought this camera so I could shoot youth football at night. My D300 just wasn't cutting it when I had to crank up the ISO.

I upgraded to this after using the D90 for a month... the D90 is a fantastic camera for it's league, but I just wasn't getting the low light performance I expected. I prefer to shoot without flash in low light conditions (restaurant, bar, etc) so this was one reason keeping me from being completely happy. My friends all had the D700 so after a very fun month with the D90 I bit the bullet to upgrade. My fiance said that the frowns she used to see from my D90 low light pics were now replaced by smiles. Nikon has put together a true winner of a prosumer camera putting the capabilities of a pro sensor into a more manageable package. If I had to say there was a negative it's just the lack of video... but I never once used the video capabilities of the D90 when I had it so it wasn't a huge deal. The MP count is lower compared to the Canon 5D Mark II however I don't primarily shoot in situations where I need to crop much or blow a pic up to oblivion so it wasn't an advantage for me. I've always preferred Nikon ergonomics over the Canon, but beyond that the D700 just is a perfect package for me.
