I didn't have time to buy anything else from Abes (I was in NY for a short vacation), but I'm looking forward to shop again in this site, since I´m very pleased with my purchase, the shipping times and the sales man I've contacted.

Photography is one of my hobbies and I've been a Nikon user for years. "Cream always rises to the top" and Nikon products are all "Cream".

Great camera but also very complex

4.0

PROS

  • Quality Construction

CONS

  • Battery
  • Difficult To Use

BEST USES

  • Low light photography
  • Upgrade

Comments:

This was an upgrade from the common, standard point-and-shoot digital cameras. After comparing Canon and Nikon models, this was selected as a great "beginner to amateur" camera based upon many reviews. The quality of the pictures, especially when compared to a point-and-shoot camera is superb. The versatility of the camera opens up a vast range of photo opportunities. A minor point is that battery life is short. You must have a backup battery. Sadly when connected via a USB cable to the computer it does not charge the battery (like other Nikon point-and-shoot cameras). In fact there is no way to charge the battery except via the external charger after removing the battery. If you need extended shooting, you have to purchase as an additional accessory a separate DC power back. The operation of the camera is very complex, at leave for an amateur. Even upgrading from a Nikon point-and-shoot still did not prepare me for all the powerful features. The problem is the manual is extremely abbreviated and so does not do an adequate job of explaining some advanced functions. Some functions are only available in limited image quality modes, some with only some file types, and others in various camera modes. For example, trying to bracket a shot for HDR requires a specific mode, image quality, and other settings to work. It takes a lot of trial and error to find the right combination, especially since the manual superficially covers the more advanced functions. I am sure there is a learning curve with other DSLR cameras, but since this is my first, I am not familiar with any others. This one has all (and more) of what I would ever need in a camera. It might be more limited in what it could do for a professional, but then it costs far less than the top-end cameras. The picture quality is comparable to even the top-end cameras, and more than most novice and amateurs would need. In summary, a fantastic camera that will take a while to master, but will provide years of capability and enjoyment.

Great buy

5.0

PROS

  • Easy To Set Up
  • Low Power Consumption
  • Easy To Use

CONS

BEST USES

  • Upgrade
  • Replacement
  • HD video camera

Comments:

-Needed to replace aging MiniDV camera so the Nikon 5100 is perfect, doing an excellent job of shooting video and stills in one unit. -With the 55-300mm zoom lens, kids sporting events and activities can be captured close up and the flip out screen makes it easy to reach above obstacles and keep the subject in view. -Keep in mind that video is limited to 20 minute segments (and also to available memory on SD card); however, it hasn't been a problem for longer events, by just a quick second stop and restart. -Vibration Reduction works well, even at full zoom, although a tripod is even better.

Lot of Camera for the Money

5.0

PROS

  • Many great features
  • Large sensor
  • High quality images

CONS

  • Rather complicated

BEST USES

  • Upgrade
  • Exhibition images
  • Raw format images

Comments:

Bought this camera to make exhibition quality images, and I am very happy with it. The large sensor, same as higher priced Nikons, is great and the noise levels are extremely low. The 18-55 and 55-300 lenses are very sharp for their price range, and the camera's raw image handling is outstanding. It is a lot more complicated than my Panasonic FZ-40, but worth the effort to learn its nuances. Lot of camera for its price, and I highly recommend it for enthusiasts.
