Nikons 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Lens features a fast, wide-angle to medium telephoto AF-S zoom lens optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX (23.9 x 36mm) and DX-format image sensors.
I purchased this lens prior to going on vacation in Hawaii. My purpose for buying it was that I was having great difficulty in the past with photographing luaus, lava tubes and other lowlight events. I was absolutely astonished at the results that I got with the 24-70 mm lens over any of the lens that I had used. The pitches were sharp and vibrant. The landscapes will also astonishing and I really could not be more pleased. I have read most of the raves about this lens and they have been absolutely accurate.

The best zoom lens in the Nikkor line-up!!! Super sharp from edge to edge on Nikon FX sensor and wide open, built like a tank, quick to focus, no distortion until you get wider than 28mm, beautiful bokeh, and good feel in my hands. I can't think of anything bad to say about this lens other than it's on the expensive side, but well worth it for this quality of glass, and it could use VR at the medium telephoto end. This little zoom has replaced my dedicated 24mm, 50mm, and to some extent, 85mm primes. It just amazes me how Nikon was able to accomplish all of these feats in this zoom. This lens is destined to become a legend, so get it while it is in production b/c someday someone will offer you 3x what you paid for it. It's an instant classic!!!

Comments:
This is an awesome sick mid-zoom lens from Nikon!!! It rivals the sharpness I get out of my AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4G. I primarily rely on my 24mm f/1.4G, my 85mm f/1.4G, and 70-200mm f/2.8G to photograph 99.99% of what I do, which is primarily mundane family events, special occasions, vacations, etc., BUT I got tired of switching out the prime lenses, so enter the 24-70mm f/2.8G zoom, and I was just blown away!!! I have a Nikon D3s and a D7000 (for when I need more pixel density on the smaller APS-C sized sensor, or when I don't feel like lugging the D3s around), and this lens certainly pushes the resolution limits of the D3s and probably the D7000. I shot this lens at 24mm and I didn't notice much distortion difference between this zoom and the dedicated 24mm f/1.4G prime, which costs more than the 24-70mm f/2.8. I wish I had the money to buy 2 copies of this lens because both my FX D3s and the DX D7000 are both fighting for time with this lens. Also, unlike most reviewers, I don't find this lens excessively large or heavy -- it's certainly heavier than those cheap-o plastic toy lenses that Nikon sells at the mass market, but as far as professional lenses are concerned, this is a lightweight lens (try lugging around the 70-200 f/2.8G). I did however find the hood a bit obstructive -- not sure why it needs to be so large and wide. Overall, the focus is fast and right on, the color rendition is stupendous, it's sharper than a Japanese samurai sword across the FX frame with no light falloff at the corners, and it's built to US military grade standards, which is to say that it could withstand a tour of duty in Iraq with no problems. I wish I could say enough good things about this lens, but I can't and you have to see it to believe it. Nikon created a miracle lens here, so if you have the money, buy it now, and if not, then borrow money from your local loan shark and buy it anyways. You will NOT regret purchasing this lens. It is my full-time "GO-TO" lens and will be for a long time hereafter.(:

Upgraded from 18-200mm all around lens to nikon 24-70mm and this lens has not been off my D300s since I bought it. Images are tack sharp and the focus is fast. Haven't tried it much et but so far the results are promising. This is a very good buy.

I've been wanting this lens for some time now and finally decided that I wouldn't and couldn't wait any longer to purchase. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner! I absolutely love this lens, it is my go to lens for any occasion and it always delivers the best shots. You really do get what you pay for and this lens isn't cheap. If your looking at others in this category that are less money, wait, and once you are able to buy this lens do it. You will definitely be happy with the purchase.

This is a great product. [...] I was concerned about its sharpness and ran a number of tests to check it out, but the best test was using it at a business picnic where I took photos of colleagues. Virtually all of the photos (except those due to the photographer's movement) were tack sharp as were blown-up isolations of specific individuals. This is an expensive lens but is great if you want sharp photos and can afford it.

I have a Nikon D700 and before I bought this lens, my only lens was the 85mm 1.4G (a great lens). But this new lens hasn't been off my camera yet. I love the versatility I get with this lens vs. the prime. Quality is matched and this lens is super fast! Love it!

I consider myself an "advanced" amateur photographer. Like everyone else I want to take the best quality photographs I possibly can. Therefore, I saved my money to buy the best quality of equipment. Ater purchasing and using the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8G lens, I believe it is an exceptional lens for all manner of photography. On my Nikon camera body this lens is perfect, with a range of a wide-angle lens to a short telephoto lens. This lens is so sharp and fast focusing that it can be used in every venue of photography. Bokeh is terriffic for portraits; it is super fast for short-range sports event photography and spot-on-sharp for landscape photography. Granted, the cost and weight of this lens are high, but this lens is the one I have on my camera the majority of the time. I use my other lenses, a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D, a Nikon 105mm f/2.8G micro, and a 70-200mm f/2.8G, with/or without an extender, for other photographic opportunities or when required. My Nikon's SB900 speedlights work very well with these lenses' and supoort Nikon's precision i-TTL flash control. Professional photographers' websites also list photographs taken with the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G lens. So I highly reccommend Nikon's 24-70mm f/2.8G lens and it would be my first choice among Nikon lenses.

I've only had the lens for about 2 weeks but I absolutely love it. I used this lens indoors to shoot a basketball game and this is when I realized the quality of this lens. It focuses very fast and is very sharp. I don't think anyone would expect to hear anything different, as this lens is known for it's quality of build, sharpness, nice bokeh and quick focus. I love the range of the lens and find it staying on the camera most of the time. I did speak with a representative from Abe of Maine, who gave me a great deal on a set of filters, so that just added to my already sweet purchase. This lens is a little expensive, but well worth the money. It's a fantastic lens and a purchase you will not regret.
