I bought this to replace my old lens that came with my D50. I had bought a new D5000 body and my old lens was acting up. This one has the added VR feature. Very happy with it.

Purchased this lens after dropping the standard 18-55. The VR function adds so much to this lens! Hate that I had to spend the money to replace a lens but did open the opportunity to upgrade to the VR.

Comments:
This lens simply helps to produce sharp, clear images in a variety of light situations. The VR capability allows one to take hand-held pictures in low light conditions, which is fantastic. While the range of the zoom is not exceptional, it does provide an acceptable range for most general photography. You'll find that you just want to leave it on your camera most of the time!
