The worlds first macro lens featuring a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and the Nikon Vibration Reduction System (VRII) allowing for high-quality hand-held macro shooting.
I have a Nikon D70 body which, with this lense attached, is perfect for taking photographs of small items for my [@]listings. I use it in conjunction with a Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System which I also purchased from Abe's of Maine. Together these items make a perfect combination for my needs.

i'm so excited about this lens! it's my fave and well worth the bucks...love it! i use it with my d80 and it's solid! i'll shoot anything that moves and even ordinary objects, like produce all looks amazing through this lens. super duper image quality. i've read here that folks tend to have the AF hunt in low lighting, but hook this baby up to a tripod and set to manual focus...poof, no more hunting! its a little bit heavier than my larger zoom lens, but it's made very well and for that, i'll take the weight with this kind of quality.

This is an excellent lens for macros and portraits. This lens is well built and pro quality. The only negative feature (not so bad), is it's weight. I have photographed flowers and insects and the results have been great.

I've been using it primarily on a tripod (with the VR off), so I can't attest to the hand held results. It does hunt on close up subjects, which is no huge surprise. Right now, I'm working on getting a broader depth of field on the close up, so there is much to learn. I have no issues with this lens.

This is my best lens other than the 70-200mm VR. I previously had the 60mm af-s micro, but to shoot small creatures the working distance is way too short. The 105 provides more room for both shooting bugs and flash (though I use off-camera flash for macro most of the time). This lens is sharp, sharp, sharp! The bokeh is also amazing.

I wish the focus range switch had one more setting. The lens has a tendency to hunt for focus.

I have played with the lens for a few days and so far I love it. At close range it seems to have a bit of a difficult time focusing. The picture is really sharp.

Excellent Nikon optics. Heavy lens but certainly manageable. Autofocus good for portraits but turn it off for macro work. VR does allow hand holding. Basically you get what you pay for with this lens. There are cheaper lenses available but overall if you can afford the price, go for it.

Comments:
This is a hidden jewel of Nikkon that many do not know about. It is a first macro lens with VR. I've used two copies of this lens already and have never encountered any focus problems on either one of them, nor have I heard any focus problems from anyone using it. Once it is in the right range (1-2m and infinity), focus is relatively fast. It is not as zippy as the superb legendary 24-70mm Nikkor, but fast-enough nevertheless. Once it locks on focus, you have supreme confidence that you have a super sharp picture. The VR works wonderfully at longer range, giving you about 3 stops of non-shake advantage (literature claims 4, but in my practice I get about 2-3). At close range less than 1 meter, your VR advantage reduces to about 1 stop. This 1 stop may not be significant when shooting bugs, jewelry, and such, but is a bit helpful when you try to focus. In macro mode, one should always shoot with flash systems or in a controlled lightbox environment anyways. This macro lens is a joy to use on APS-C to get a repro of 1.5X. On the FX bodies such as the D700, it doubles as a superb medium-long portrait lens. The bokeh of the lens is actually creamier and more pleasing than the Nikkor 85mm F/1.4D and some longer lenses. This has become my favorite lens for head-shots and shots where bokeh is of high importance. Given so much advantages of this lens, there are obvious down-sides. One is that it is super heavy, and the other one is that it is not cheap, at about $899 now. It was sold for less than $650 brand new a few months ago before Nikon raised all of their prices. As with all pro Nikkor lenses, this one is heavy duty with superb built quality and unparalleled resale values compared to any other brand. If you have cash to burn, this is one of the least talked about but one of the most praised general purpose portrait and macro lens to get.
