Excellent Device, but Weak Base Maps

5.0

PROS

CONS

  • Base Maps are Weak

BEST USES

  • Geocaching
  • Cycling
  • Hiking

Comments:

We use the product mostly for Geocaching and Car directions. Keep in mind that although this is the best handheld GPS on the market, your expectations should be set: 1) You will need to spend about $100 on good turn by turn maps 2) If you want hiking maps, another $100 or less. The device itself is very good. Turn by turn will get you there, but sometimes not the most direct street route. Definitely a better outdoors GPS than a car GPS, but it's really meant for outdoors. Geocaching with this device has been awesome!! We've had great signal strength in various terrains.

I live just minutes from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park so I tend to spend alot of my free time hiking the hundreds of miles of trails. Even under heavy dense canopy, on steep slopes, in a deep valley or some remote hollow, I have never lost signal. It's always there when I need it. Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat.

Top-notch handheld GPS

5.0

PROS

  • Reliable Reception
  • Quick Navigation
  • Accurate
  • Mac compatible
  • Quick Signal

CONS

  • Expensive maps

BEST USES

  • Geocaching
  • Hiking
  • Hunting and fishing

Comments:

Thus far, I've primarily used the 60CSx for geocaching and hiking...it's perfect for those uses...relatively small and lightweight, superbly accurate (even under heavy tree canopies), easily read in the field in sunlight. I've also used it to mark open-lake fishing spots I want to return to. Since it works so well in heavily-forested areas, it's obviously well suited for accurate positioning on open water. My only negative comment is that the additional (topo/marine) maps are expensive and can nearly double the cost of the unit. But it's without peer with respect to function and accuracy in a portable.

Nearly Perfect

PROS

  • Accurate
  • Reliable Reception
  • Topographic profile
  • Great data from Tracks
  • Intuitive Menu

CONS

  • Limited base map
  • Quiet alarms
  • Small screen

BEST USES

  • Cycling
  • Hiking

Comments:

Very functional and accurate, but not complete on it's own unless you only navigate major rodes. Plan to buy the additional topo or city street map. Volume of the waypoint alarms does not cut the wind and road noise when cycling. However, I'm still experimenting with that.

PROS

  • Reliable Reception
  • Quick Signal

CONS

  • Bulky

BEST USES

Comments:

I am a hunter/hiker and like to use it in the woods. This product is much better than my older Etrex Vista in that it obtains/retains the signal faster and in denser woods and is much easier to use. I wanted this unit because of the compass and altimeter functions.

Comments:

I use the 60csx for geocaching and hiking...which is probably what it is meant for most. Although maps are available for this product in addition to the base map, if road navigation is your primary use, look for a different Garmin product as screen size is not optimal when you are driving. For off the road use, this is an outstanding product and very versatile. If you are technically oriented, you can create your own Topo maps from data available at various web sites. You can also add unlimited Points of Interest that you can create or find on the web for free. The expansion card slot allows you to have unlimited data for maps and POIs. It is very accurate...which is the most important feature of any GPS.
