This is my favorite lens. I take many of my shots with this one. Super fast and accurate auto focus, great for sports action. Nice creamy bokeh for those creative shots. The lack of IS doesn't bother me at all since 99% of the things I shoot would have me turn it off anyway. Although I wouldn't mind having it for that 1%... I love the contrast you get from this lens as well. It's extremely sharp--even wide open at f2.8. I just love this lens!!!

I used this lens for a couple of hundred test shoots over the last week. I tested it under following condition. Camera Canon Rebel T2i shooting conditions: 1. bright light - very well handling and crisp shots specially with low ISO settings. you have the whole range up f32 without problems 2. dim light conditions. without tripod or mono-pod f-stops around 2.8 to 5.6 are usable. shutter time should be more than 1/20s to get good result. ISO-range could increase to 400 ISO 3. low light conditions. ISO settings are increasing now fast up to ISO 6400. Now photos are noisy (but this more a problem with the camera). the use of a tripod is really recommended. 4. night shooting. very good results with a tripod. 5. tracking squirrels while they are moving distance below 10ft. Other lens failed totally with that one gives me some interesting results. Well 30% of photos are blurry but this is a matter of wrong setting (forgot to select continuous auto focusing) and handling. Because of the heavy weight of the lens you have to train a little how you point with that lens. normally I leave the T-mount attached to support the lens with the palm of my hand to stabilize it. Auto focus is mandatory. To zoom the lens in time is a little bit tricky and you have to learn it. On the other hand controls of zoom and focus are responding very well. I used this lens also together with a 2 x tele-converter from Tamron. with that one it sits not perfect. if you want to use a tele-converter the Canon EF would be recommended. Advantage on a small budget would be that you can cover also 400 mm with an steady aperture of 5.6 Because of of the high range of aperture you can use with that lens, you have an excellent control about the result. The Missing IS not really an issue. Under most conditions i shot with shutter speeds between 1/50 to 1/320 on ISO ranges between ISO 100 to ISO 400. With shutter speeds below 1/20 the results becomes shaky. It's really up to you if you want to spend another $1000 for the IS. For fast moving objects you don't need it. And mountains mostly move so slowly that a tripod is a good replacement

I LOVE this lens. I waited a while to purchase it and now that I have it, I regret that I did not have it for some past events. The photos are crisp and clear. My only complaint is the weight , but I knew that going into the purchase. I purchased a monopod for support and have NO REGRETS!!! Once you use this lens, you will not need many others!

I use this taking pictures of my boys during their sporting events inside and out. I needed the f2.8 and the sharpness I kept on reading about. I see this lens every sporting event I attend - luv it!

I use this lens mostly for wildlife photography. It works well for landscapes also. Being a mid range telephoto it would work well in many situations if it wasn't so heavy. I'm using this with a Canon T2i and it seems more like I'm attaching the camera to the lens than the lens to the camera. It's big. It comes with a Tripod Ring Mount which I use regularly with, at least, a monopod. Great lens!!

I've been drooling over this lens for a while. Now that I finally have it I wish I hadn't put off the purchase for so long. I could not decide between IS vs. non-IS the 4.0L was not even considered since I knew i would be in low light situations. Don't spend the money on the IS version. It's not worth the added weight, size and battery consumption. Spring for a monopod if you need to. If you can afford this lense you might as well move up to at least a 50D (my next purchase). I'm using this with a 20D currently and I'm very happy with the results.

I use this lens for children sports and 1st Communion shots. Debated about paying extra for the IS version, but so far it doesn't seem like I've missed many shots not having that feature.

After I received the 70-200MM f2.8 lens, I started taking pictures of everything and what dramatic pictures I received. I had been saving up for over 2 years to purchase this lens due to the [$] price tag, but it was well worth it. Wish that I had the money to purchase this ALOT sooner. I took some great trips right before I got this lens. Now trying to convince my wife to go back and visit some of the spots, just I can take pictures with this lens.

This is the lens I've been lusting after for months and it has not disappointed. I love my 85mm prime lens but when I need to shoot candids of kids, this allows me to back away quite a bit to better allow for natural shots. Some may feel the weight of this lens is a negative...I personally feel it is a positive. I like the hefty build and quality you can feel. It has not been troublesome for me at all.

Excellent lens, fast, accurate, crisp pictures, very good light management. A bit expensive, however, it does a good job.. Looks great on my Canon T1i.
