This lens and the Canon EF 24-70L f/2.8 are the 'must have' Canon lenses. Get these two lenses first if you can swallow the cost. Avoid the kit lenses that come prepackaged with the EOS DSLRs.

I have wanted a lens of this quality for a very long time. The images are outstanding. It is fast and extremely reliable. Hand holding is aided with it's second generation stabilizer but for extended use a monopod is required. The added weight can be a drag if you are out hiking but well worth the effort. I use it mainly to take action shots both inside and outside. I love this lens.

I bought the lens as the first step in upgrading my overall camera system and was it an amazing place to start. Immediately noticed the improvement in lense speed and quality over my previous lense. I am a mechanical engineer and I bought the lense on reputation and reviews having never actually used the lense. Let me tell you that immediately upon picking it up, you notice the precision on how it is made. It feels rock solid and its motion is flawless. I am very happy (also a lot poorer but you only live once) with this lens. Finally delivery from Abes as in 2 days when I picked the 5-7 day ground option.

I upgraded to this lens from the EF 70-200mm f/4.0 IS USM and the extra speed and clarity of this lens is remarkable! While an expensive lens, this was well worth the upgrade.

BEST USES

Comments:

The color rendition, contrast, sharpness of this lens are beyond belief. I have a Canon 70-200 f4.0L (non-IS), and while it takes great shots, I don't think the two compare. Add in the extra stop and the new IS and this is hard to beat. Price is a consideration, of course, and some will argue that primes are better (they probably are sharper), but get this one lens and you're done at this length. After the 24-70, I would say save up and get this next.

It's bit bulky, on the heavy side and pricy - but then you get something that can deliver you shots that would not be possible, in my case especially indoor sports. If want to get those shots, then go get the best lens - which is this one ;)

amazing sharpness and great bokeh on this lens. It's extremely heavy and a definite workout if you use it all day (i.e.- wedding) but you will be hard-pressed to find a more versatile lens with this image quality.

This lens gives beautiful bokeh in portrait shots. Hand holding this heavy lens is made easier with the IS II upto 4 stops. I use this lens with my 5D Mark II and I get really satisfying results. Excellent buy!

Comments:

I am plugging this lens with my t2i. I would say this lens is a beast! Its quality built design and performance worth for its price. It produces very sharp image. The ultrasonic motor provide very quiet and very fast focusing. Also the significant of Image Stabilizer is a Plus feature if you like taking photos in low light condition. I was in dilemma on whether I should get the IS or Non-IS version, but I feel no regret of it for spending couple more hundred bucks. It is a very good lens. On the other hand, this lens is heavy. When i hook up my battery grip, the canon speedlite 430 EX II flash with this lens, i feel like i am carrying a 20 lbs dumbbell with me all day. Also the 1.6x crop sensor from t2i will have to make you step back a little more in order to achieve the desire angle and same focal length you want when comparing to full frame equivalent. Other than that there is no problem with this lens!! I would recommend this lens to everyone. It is a good lens for investment!
