I've found the EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM Lens to be very versatile. It has become my favorite lens.

If you're going to buy one lens for a supporting Canon, this is it. It delivers great pictures, and it does everything. There are better lens out there, but for the price, you cannot beat the 17-85. Search any review site you want, this is a great deal!

I love this lens. Great upgrade from the kit 18-55 lens. The image quality if fantastic and the USM motor delivers quick and quiet operation. Would have gotten 5 stars if Canon supplied the lens hood instead of selling it as an accessory for nearly forty dollars. Bad Canon!
