I bought this lens to replace the kit lens that came with my camera. It provides consistently sharp images. It focuses quietly and quickly. While it is somewhat heavy, it is well worth the trade off for the images it captures.

Comments:
After a 20 year professional career using manual focus lens I recently got back to shooting semi professionally and choose to use the 15-85 as my main money lens. The first thing I had to learn was the limitations of auto focus. Once you understand that then your results will be more consistent. This lens does not try to do too much which keeps the wide and telephoto ends of the zoom more toward pro quality images. Granted it's not an L series lens but will get the job done with basic money making situations like portrait and event photography. It will suffice for some commercial product applications. I wasn't sure how much business I would be doing and didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on lenses to "tool up" without knowing the market where I live so I chose this lens first as my bread and butter lens. I will be adding a telephoto lens in the near future around the 55-250 range to use for more personal photos like wildlife and sports. I did read the pro reviews on the Canon 15-85 and I was satisfied that the quality would be in the range that I need. The 15 mm wide angle was right in my wheelhouse for landscapes and interior photos. The photos I included were taken at the Ripleys Aquarium in Gatlinburg Tn. The lens had some focusing issues that are inherent to auto focus lens and about 30% of the shots were not sharp because of the low light and shooting through plexi. I did not know exactly how well auto focus would work shooting through plexiglass but it does work reasonable well. The pop up flash of the Canon T3i worked way better than what I expected. The key is to shoot at an angle to the glass. Ironically I'm an underwater photographer and have shot similar photos while being in the water with the sharks, that said I was amazed how well they turned out.

I changed from the 17-55 2.8 to this lens. I really like the additional range and I feel like the images are a little sharper as well. If you don't need the f2.8, I definitely recommend this lens over the 17-55 on the 7D, because of the 7D's exceptional high ISO performance.

This is by far the best lens I own to date. Fast, very clear through out the entire range. It is the perfect match to my Canon T2i/550D.

The first weekend I used it at a motorcycle rally. Great clear fast focus photos. About 2 weeks later went for sunrise photos in the county. W0W the perfect landscape, sunrise/sunset lens. It is worth every penny.
