I never thought macro photography could be so interesting and fun. This lens has a very precise area of focus. Macro isn't all you can do with it but for amatuer or enthusiast, you can have fun all day long. Half the price of is IS model but you just need a little more patience. I would highly recommend this and all Canon lens!

I found that the 100mm macro can take a second to focus on close objects. There is about a 6 inch working distance with this lens and, not being used to that, I often got too close to small subjects. There is plenty of room for lights and diffusors. I have included three test photos with this review. In the first two, I used a very small test pattern that is one millimeter across. Photo A was done with the 100mm macro at F2.8 and it shows detail to about 1/40 of a mm. This level of sharpness held up to F11. Sharpness decreased progressively from F16 to F32. For comparison, Photo B was done with a Canon 50mm F1.8 normal lens on a EF25 extension tube. The photo was done at F5.6, the sharpest aperture. At F5.6 to F11, the 50 mm lense came the closest to the sharpness of the macro lens. These pictures are both 100% crops from the center of the full frame of a Canon 5D Mark II camera. I found that the autofocus always did a better job of focusing on the test pattern than I could, using manual focus. The EF25 extension tube works with the macro lens, giving what appears to be perhaps one and a half life size pictures. The last photo is of a cheap watch that looked interesting. WELL... They will only allow 2 pictures. So the watch is out.

This is a really good macro lens! I do photography as a hobby, and macro photography is my favorite, and this was actually the first lens I ever splurged on. You can definitely get close to your subjects! The only downside is sometimes it takes time to focus, but it's not that big of a deal.

I use this for macro of flowers and insects. I have also used it for portraits as well. The lens is sharp but it is slow to focus and at times I turn off auto focus and do it manually.

Comments:
This lens is incedible. For 1:1 macro, it's the way to go. The 100mm focal length means you don't crowd out your subject, and the USM is fast and quiet. The lens is lightweight, since it's mostly plastic, but the focusing elements are all internal, meaning the lens never changes length, reducing the chance of bumping the lens or startling subjects like insects. I'd suggest it over the 50mm EF macro and the 60mm EF-S macro lens due to true 1:1 reproduction, and internal focusing. There's no need to step up to the L version of this glass, because IS really isn't useful in a well-lit environment or when using flash, which is almost a certainty in macro photography.

Works better in manual focus, autofocus doesn't really focus on what you want it to half the time. Must choose your focus point carefully is what I've found. Overall, I am learning the lens and really like it.

Comments:
If you're going to be doing any kind of close up photography toss in a circular polarizing filter or at the very least a UV. It will save you from tons of headaches form the reflected light when shooting up close. Also the filter will act as a barrier against possible dust particles into the lens. This helps because in macro photography EVERYTHING shows up.

This lens received good reviews everywhere I looked, and they were justified. I'm impressed with it's close focus ability, and the sharpness of the resulting pictures. The lens is a bit on the heavy side, so a hand grip strap for the camera is probably a good idea if you're going to consistently use this lens.
